The World Snooker Championship (WSC) was a series of video games based on snooker featuring licensing from the World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association starting 2001, and ending in 2011; a new licensed World Snooker game, Snooker 19, was released in 2019. The first four games were published by Codemasters and developed by Blade Interactive Software. Later games were published by Sega, Deep Silver and Koch Media.

Overview[edit]

The first game was simply named 'World Championship Snooker' and released in 2000. In 2004, following a change in publisher, the series was renamed World Snooker Championship to better reflect the name of the tournament body and the actual tournament.

In 2005 the box art featured the snooker player Paul Hunter who died in 2006 from cancer. When the game was re-released as a budget title from Sold-Out Software, he remained on the cover and in-game, but a memorial notice was included on the back of the case ('Paul Hunter 1978 - 2006').

The 2007 version was the first to feature fully licensed pool tournaments. In previous versions, pool was a side mode that could only be played in matches against the computer or other players.

From 2008 onwards, the series was renamed WSC Real: World Snooker Championship. The branding was changed to reflect more realistic gameplay, including the ability to play in first person and view shots from any angle, and characters' lifelike emotions.

World Championship Snooker[edit]

The first game was released in 2000 for PlayStation and later in 2001 for Microsoft Windows. The box art featured Stephen Hendry, Ronnie O'Sullivan and Mark Williams.

World Championship Snooker 2002[edit]

World Championship Snooker 2002 was released on 28 September 2001 exclusively for PlayStation 2. The second game's box art also featured Williams, Hendry and Sullivan. WCS 2002 featured improved gameplay, and 'player aids', such as a cueball line, showing the direction of the shot being played.

World Championship Snooker 2003[edit]

World Championship Snooker 2003 was released on PlayStation 2, Xbox, and Microsoft Windows. The box art featured world champions Peter Ebdon, Stephen Hendry, Ronnie O'Sullivan, John Higgins, Ken Doherty and Mark Williams. The game was the first to feature pool modes, with both eight-ball and nine-ball pool included.

The game included Big Break presenter John Virgo and a version of the infamous 'John Virgo's Trick Shot' mode in-game.

World Championship Snooker 2004 was released on Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 2 and Xbox. The box art featured Stephen Hendry, Mark Williams, Steve Davis and Ronnie O'Sullivan. The 2004 edition featured an expanded roster, including almost every member of the World Snooker Tour (except Jimmy White), and licenses for official arenas such as the Crucible Theatre.

The game also introduced online multiplayer to the series, with players able to play single matches and tournaments. The game was the last in the series published by Codemasters.

World Snooker Championship 2005[edit]

World Snooker Championship 2005 was the first licensed World Snooker Championship video game. The box art featured Paul Hunter, Ronnie O'Sullivan and Steve Davis. This was the first game in the series with the name 'World Snooker Championship'. The game was published by Sega instead of Codemasters.

The game was also the first released on a handheld console, as the World Snooker Challenge 2005 on the PlayStation Portable. The game featured a playable 'League of Champions' mode, where infamous past snooker matches can be replayed. The game included additional modes such as bar billiards. In 'free play' mode, variables such as table size can be altered.

World Snooker Championship 2007[edit]

World Snooker Championship 2007 was released on 12 January 2007. The box art features John Higgins, Ronnie O'Sullivan and Shaun Murphy. This was the first game in the series to be released on the seventh generation of consoles, with PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 releases. This installment also added a new mode called 'Golden Cue,' where custom matches can be played.

A new assist that would appear in all remaining WSC games shows a provisional finishing position for the cue ball as a circular silhouette. This circle expanded or retracted depending on the player's skill and difficulty of the shot involved.

World Snooker Championship: Season 2007-08[edit]

World Snooker Championship: Season 2007-08 was released exclusively on Nintendo DS on 26 October 2007. The game's box art featured Mark Selby and John Higgins. The game was the only release in the series for a Nintendo handheld console. The edition was panned for its lack of online play.

WSC Real 08: World Snooker Championship[edit]

WSC Real 08: World Snooker Championship was released on 14 November 2008 for the Wii. The box art featured Ronnie O'Sullivan and Steve Davis. The game was controlled with the Wii Remote, and was shipped with a cue attachment. The game was released on other consoles as WSC Real 09: World Snooker Championship. It was later released simultaneously for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 on 3 April 2009. The version was identical apart from graphical improvements.

WSC Real 11: World Snooker Championship was released on 15 April 2011 for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. The box art features Ronnie O'Sullivan. A gameplay function introduced in this edition was the ability to retake shots a certain number of times per game. The 2011 edition featured improvements to the character creation system.

Through the medium of videogames we can traverse galaxies, inhabit imaginary worlds, surmount all obstacles and stand proudly on the shoulders of giants, masters of all we survey. Or play snooker.While not exactly beyond the realms of fantasy, for those dissuaded from their local baize emporium by the underlying threat of violence and the poorly-prepared food, World Championship Snooker brings all the fun of the cue into your fetid hovel. It's not the first game to attempt this, and - imminent human extinction notwithstanding - it won't be the last.

And therein lies the problem. Apart from bringing the graphics up to the current industry standard, there isn't a great deal you can do with a snooker game. Obviously, realism is the key, but there's still a certain threshold, and once the physics are perfected, there's nowhere else to go. So in an attempt to capture the 'drama'of the sport, Codemasters has pulled its wallet out and secured the World Championship licence. Which probably explains the name and the familiar theme tune.

With a pseudo-career option, the feeling is clearly that of a young buck trying to make his way in the game, with victory at the Crucible the ultimate goal.There is a reasonably exhaustive qualification process to go through before you get a sniff of Sheffield, where 20 of the world's top players await. Unfortunately, the days when Alex Higgins headbutted referees, relieved himself into plant pots and threatened to have opponents shot are behind us, but among the modern-day automatons featured are Stephen Hendry, Ronnie O'Sullivan and World Champion Mark Williams.

Of the old guard, Dennis Taylor has been brought out of retirement, and as such is the only player here to have a dedicated verse in Chas and Dave's memorable paean to the green baize, Snooker Loopy. He also provides the in-game commentary, offering a master class in the bleeding obvious.

On the table, it's business as usual, and with the requisite aiming aids on, it's the equivalent of being a half-decent player, and is as much about holding position and developing breaks as it is about getting the ball in the hole. A predetermined power bar is used rather than the more erratic system of pretending the mouse is the cue, and while perfectly manageable, it's a little clinical.

Unlike real snooker, it's refreshing to actually be able to play to a passable level. In real life, nobody has ever got a break of more than 16, whereas here a half-century is well within the bounds of possibility. Ultimately, any criticism of the game is also a criticism of snooker, and while it can be dispiriting to have to sit back and watch your opponent rack up a match-winning break, this can mercifully be speeded up.If it's possible to imagine atmosphere in a snooker game, then IVCS captures it, epitomised by sporadic outbreaks of coughing in the auditorium, a phenomenon familiar to legions of TV viewers. Look, we're trying to big it up, but at the end of the day it's a snooker game. If that's what you want then this will do.
